Our Dogs

Things are ever-changing here, as with any innovative breeding program.  I generally have 6-9 girls that are coming along as either a) accomplished their extensive health clearances at 24 months of age and are ready for breeding, or b) are living out their fancy-free puppy and teenager days as we anxiously anticipate clearance time.  It is a full 2-year commitment & investment for every one of our dogs to reach the age for passing all clearances recommended for our breed.  Sometimes, difficult decisions must be made, and we occasionally have older puppies or teenagers available. My girls are always “retired” by their fifth birthday, or if at any time motherhood is just not offering their best life.

I do not keep boy dogs on our farm.  I have a few stud dogs that I co-own with local friends, and they come to “visit” on occasion.  For everyone’s sanity, it is a much easier life to keep the boys and girls out of the same household!  Most of our breedings are done thanks to modern technology (progesterone testing, artificial and transcervical insemination, chilled semen, and FedEx!).  With all the tools offered to experienced breeders, we can ship semen to and from all over the globe in order to make the best pedigrees and puppies.  Please keep that in mind if you have the notion “I want to meet both parents”.  For most quality breeders, we often have never met the stud dog, ourselves.  We are making scientific decisions based on pedigrees, clearances, breeder reputation, and known temperaments of generations of dogs behind the matches we make.  It’s not too often (but it can happen!) that the very best puppies can be made just because two dogs share the same household.

All MarshyHope breeding dogs are of the highest quality English lines.  You can research all health tests and pedigrees at the non-profit database provided by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals.  You should confirm and cross-reference any breeder claims at this site OFA.org.  If you cannot find the parents in this database, you should be asking a lot of questions about the investment you are getting ready to make – financially and emotionally.

Breeding Labradors should be tested and cleared for:

OFA Hips, OFA Elbows, OFA Cardiac Clearance, OFA annual registered eye certification from ACVO Ophthalmologist, Centronuclear Myopathy (CNM), Cystinuria, Degenerative Myelopathy (DM), Exercise Induced Collapse (EIC), Hereditary Nasal Parakeratosis (HNPK), Progressive Rod-Cone Degeneration (PRA-prcd), D Locus (Dilute) DNA test

Lastly, and it pains me greatly to say, Facebook is the only way for me to keep our fans posted on what is currently happening around here.  This website requires outside, professional help to publish and maintain – so, not many updates happen here.  I am great with dogs & people – technology, not so much.

When we have a confirmed pregnancy via sonogram (about a month before the due date for a litter), the information (health clearances, pedigrees, credentials) for both parents will be posted at that time and I will open the opportunity to request an application form for the anticipated litter.
